28281Birmingham Canal Navigations (Gower Branch)Brades Top LockBrades Bottom Lock15 September 202524 October 2025We will be undertaking works at Brades Lock 3, including the replacement of both the top and bottom gates, as well as the installation of a new lock ladder.

To carry out these works safely, the navigation will be closed from Lock 1 (Brades Top Lock) through to Lock 3 from 15 September to 24 October 2025.

Alternative routes will be available via both the Old Main Line and the New Main Line to minimise disruption.

While we typically carry out lock maintenance during our winter works period, the high volume of essential lock gate repairs and replacements scheduled across the West Midlands this year means that these works must take place during the boating season.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this essential maintenance.

28456Gloucester and Sharpness CanalGloucester Dock LockGloucester Dock Lock29 August 202529 August 2026Further to the notice below, please be advised that Gloucester Lock remains closed due to low water levels in the ongoing drought conditions across the UK.

The River Severn continues to be lower than usual, and this causes larger than usual volumes of silt to be pumped in.

At this time, we are still unable to confirm when the lock will reopen.

Water levels are being closely monitored, and we will issue a further update on 11th September, or sooner if conditions improve.

Customers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and avoid Gloucester Lock until it is operational.

The canal remains open and navigable from Gloucester Docks to just above the low-level bridge at Sharpness.

Sharpness Port will continue to prioritise shipping to help preserve water levels, and leisure craft will be required to share transit through the port with ships.

Please contact Sharpness Pierhead on 01453 511968 to make arrangements.

Please be aware that ship movements are prioritised, and these temporary arrangements may lead to some delays.

Your support and understanding are greatly appreciated as we take essential steps to help preserve water levels in the canal.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this period.

If you would like to discuss this information with a member of our Customer Service Team, please contact us at [enquiries.walessouthwest@canalrivertrust.org.uk](mailto:enquiries.walessouthwest@canalrivertrust.org.uk) or call 03030 404040.

28478Leeds and Liverpool Canal (Leigh Branch)Ince Moss Railway Bridge No 2ABamfurlong Bridge No 312 August 202502 September 2026Navigation remains closed between Lock 1, Poolstock Locks and Bridge No.3, Bamfurlong Bridge on the Leigh Branch of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. The third-party utilities company continue with the repairs to their water main and are now designing a method of repair for the canal infrastructure.

This repair is anticipated to take several weeks, with a provisional completion date set as 30 September.

If you have a Ribble Link and/or a Liverpool Link booking that may be affected by this closure and would like to speak to our North West Customer Service Team regarding a possible alternative date, please call us on 0303 040 4040, or you can do so via your [online account]( .

Please note that the Ribble Link passages finish at the end of September. We are currently looking into alternative dates for a passage up on to the Lancaster Canal, however this is subject to these works. If you are affected by this closure and need to get back on to the Lancaster Canal for the winter period, please contact our North West Customer Support Team and let them know your location. Passage will be dependent on weather conditions at the time. Thank you to our customers who have already contacted our team and made themselves known.

A further update on progress made will be provided on, or before, Tuesday 16 September.

28515Oxford Canal (Southern Section - Main Line)Claydon Top Lock No 17Aynho Weir Lock No 3320 August 202522 August 2026Current navigation closure between Claydon Top Lock 17 and Little Bourton Lock 27 is to be extend to Aynho Weir Lock 33

We have continued to monitor the exceptionally dry conditions, and the impact on our reservoirs. Unfortunately, despite all our operational efforts, as rainfall has remained well below the long-term average water levels in our feeder reservoirs are continuing to fall due to canal water demands. We can now confirm that, from 4pm .Wednesday 20th August 2025, the following locks will close to navigation until there is enough rainfall to replenish our reservoirs:

* Claydon Flight Locks 17-21
* Elkington's Lock 22
* Varneys Lock 23
* Broadmoor Lock 24
* Cropredy Lock 25
* Slatmill Lock 26
* Little Bourton Lock 27
* Hardwick Lock 28
* Banbury Lock 29
* Grants Lock 30
* Kings Sutton Lock 31
* Nell Bridge Lock 33
* Aynho Weir Lock 33 *

These closures are necessary to protect increasingly limited water resources and give the navigation an opportunity to recover, as well as helping preserve canal infrastructure and ecology. We hope that this confirmation allows time for boaters to adjust their plans and relocate as needed.
If we can offer any windows at all for passage, then we will advise accordingly. We will continue to monitor the situation and will provide fortnightly updates, or sooner if conditions change.
Despite the measures we're taking, there may be extreme local circumstances that require us to take immediate action to temporarily close some other stretches on the South Oxford navigation.
If it rains enough to allow safe navigation, restrictions will be lifted: this is likely to require sufficient and prolonged rain over several weeks rather than a sudden very heavy downpour.
We understand that this continues to be disappointing news, and our priority is to reopen the canal to full navigation as soon as possible. We thank you for your support in reducing water use across our network, and reporting leaks or concerns via 0303 040 4040 or our Contact Us page.

28198Trent and Mersey Canal (Main Line - Harding's Wood to Middlewich)Kings Lock No 71Red Bull Top Lock No 4125 July 202521 August 2026Due to the continued warm, dry weather resulting in the extreme drought conditions we are experiencing, the closure from Lock 41 to Lock 71 will be extended to Lock 75 on the Trent & Mersey Canal on Thursday 28 August.

We are providing a week notice to allow our customers to adjust their plans and relocate as needed. We appreciate this is disappointing news and we do not take this decision lightly. Our local team have been managing the limited resources we have on a daily basis, however it has now come to the point where we are no longer able to provide water to the dry pounds, and we need to close off the remaining Middlewich locks due to reduced inflows.

To help you prepare, we strongly encourage all boaters to start making plans now. This includes:

* Emptying waste tanks
* Filling up water and fuel tanks
* Consider alternative methods of accessing water
* Stocking up on essential supplies
* Considering relocating your boat to areas with services

Navigation between Lock 71 and Lock 72 on the Trent & Mersey Canal, with access to the Middlewich Branch, will remain open to allow businesses within this pound to remain accessible to boating customers.

Our local team continue to carry our daily water management to ensure the stability of our infrastructure and the surrounding ecology, however without a sustained period of rainfall, the situation will likely continue.

Where resources allow, water will be sent down the flight, however we cannot promise water along these pounds and all customers who remain moored within this area should regularly check and slacken their mooring lines as required.

We would like to thank our customers for their continued support during these closures. We will continue to monitor the situation daily and will provide fortnightly updates, or sooner if conditions change. If you spot any leaks or have concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us on 0303 040 4040 or via our [Contact Us]( page.

28001Macclesfield CanalBosley Bottom Lock No 12Bosley Top Lock No 104 July 202521 August 2026Today we experienced a cill failure at Lock 4 on the Bosley Flight, resulting in a substantial water loss. Unfortunately, this means we must bring the planned closure forward, as it is no longer possible to safely keep the locks open.

Our teams are working to secure the locks and carefully manage water levels in the canal. Both the Bosley and Marple Locks will remain closed until water levels in our reservoirs have improved. We anticipate that the canals will remain closed for several weeks, but this is entirely weather‑dependent.

To support boaters during the closure, mooring restrictions will be suspended at the following locations:

Macclesfield Canal – Below Lock 12, Bosley Moorings

Macclesfield Canal – Above Lock 1, between Bridges 53 & 54

Macclesfield Canal – Between Bridges 1–3, Marple Moorings

Peak Forest Canal – Below Lock 1 to Marple Aqueduct

While the locks are closed, our teams will carry out essential repairs to the damaged cill and ensure the lock is fully operational and ready for reopening as soon as conditions allow.

We understand this is disappointing news, and our priority remains to reopen these canals to full navigation as soon as possible. Thank you for your support in reducing water use across our network and for reporting leaks or concerns via 0303 040 4040 or our Contact Us page.

* Claydon Flight Locks 17-21
* Elkington's Lock 22
* Varneys Lock 23
* Broadmoor Lock 24
* Cropredy Lock 25
* Slatmill Lock 26
* Little Bourton Lock 27
* Hardwick Lock 28
* Banbury Lock 29
* Grants Lock 30
* Kings Sutton Lock 31
* Nell Bridge Lock 33
* Aynho Weir Lock 33 *

27987Peak Forest Canal (Lower)Marple Bottom Lock No 1Marple Top Lock No 1604 July 202521 August 2026Today we experienced a cill failure at Lock 4 on the Bosley Flight, resulting in a substantial water loss.

27981Grand Union Canal (Northampton Branch)Rothersthorpe Top Lock No 1Northampton Lock No 1720 August 202521 August 2026We have continued to monitor the exceptionally dry conditions, and the impact on our reservoirs. Unfortunately, despite our operational efforts and those of our boaters to reduce the demand for water, as rainfall has remained well below the long-term average we've seen a rapid decline in the situation.

To help us conserve water and maintain safe navigation, we will be closing the Northampton Arm to passage from 4pm on Wednesday 20th August.

We are constantly reviewing the situation and as soon as conditions improve enough, we will do our upmost to provide temporary windows of passage through locks to allow boat movement.  This will be dependent on water levels improving adequately which will require sufficient and prolonged rainfall.

We understand that this continues to be disappointing news, and our priority is to reopen the canal to full navigation as soon as possible. We thank you for your support in reducing water use across our network, and reporting leaks or concerns via 0303 040 4040 or our [Contact Us page]( "Original URL: .
