Navigation closure notice: Kennet & Avon Canal, Navigation: Closed, Towpath: Open - Lock 15, Semington Lock to Lock 16, Harris Lock — from Tuesday the 2nd of July, 2019 to Wednesday the 3rd of July, 2019.

Following the repair works completed earlier this year, a laser survey is required on the downstream lock approach walls.

This requires the pound to be drained below Lock 16.

To try and minimise disruption to boaters we will start draining the pound at 5pm on Tuesday 2nd July and then reopen the canal by midday on Wednesday 3rd July.

Notification sent Tuesday the 18th of June, 2019

Navigation restriction notice: Kennet & Avon Canal, Navigation: Open, Towpath: Open - Lock 60, Crofton Lock to Lock 22, Lower Foxhangers Lock — from Friday the 21st of June, 2019 to Sunday the 21st of June, 2020.

Limited water resources due to lack of rainfall in the local area, combined with technical difficulties, mean that it has unfortunately become necessary to restrict navigation over the summit of the Kennet & Avon Canal. The affected area stretches from the bottom of Caen Hill Flight to the bottom of Crofton flight. We are of course doing everything we can to manage and resolve the technical issues, but this work could take up to a month and it is likely, depending on recovery of natural water resources, that some restrictions will continue to be needed throughout the summer. The water available and progress with works will be frequently reviewed and adjustments to the restrictions made accordingly. Initially, from Friday 21st June, the length described above will be restricted to working between 10:00hrs and 16:00hrs every day, which means that last entry into Caen Hill Flight will be at 13:00hrs. It will not be possible to physically lock every structure, and we will not clear the area of vessels outside these times, but we ask boating customers to please help us manage the situation and limit future restrictions by not drawing water through any lock outside of the working hours, and by minimising their use of water as much as possible at all times. Should you have concerns about levels during this period, please contact the Trust. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this matter. Should you require any further information about this or any other matter on the Wales and South West Region please see - Or you can e-mail - enquiries.walessouthwest@canalrivertrust.org.uk Or you can ring the Canal & River Trust on - 0303 0404040. In the case of an emergency please ring Freephone Canals on 0800 4799947

Notification sent Thursday the 20th of June, 2019

Navigation closure notice: Kennet & Avon Canal, Navigation: Closed, Towpath: Open - Lock 51, Wootton Rivers to Lock 60, Crofton Lock — from Sunday the 23rd of June, 2019 to Tuesday the 23rd of June, 2020.

Due to an issue with one of the pumps at Caen Hill, there is not enough water getting in to the Long Pound (Devizes Lock 50 to Wootton Rivers Lock) to enable any transfer of water via the Wootton Rivers pumping station up to the Crofton summit. As a result of the corresponding low levels on the Crofton summit, we unfortunately need to close the canal today between Wootton Rivers lock and Crofton lock 60. We will assess the situation again on Monday morning and provide a further update at this time.

Notification sent Sunday the 23rd of June, 2019

Navigation restriction notice: Kennet & Avon Canal, Navigation: Open, Towpath: Open - Lock 22, Lower Foxhangers Lock to Lock 61, Crossing Lock — from Monday the 24th of June, 2019 to Wednesday the 24th of June, 2020.

With reference to notices 15530 (21/06/2019) and 15545 (23/06/2019), the worsening shortage of water at the summit over the weekend, has meant that the canal has unfortunately had to remain closed between Wootton Rivers (Lock 51 ) and Crofton (Lock 61). Caen Hill flight will continue on restricted hours on Tuesday 25th (10:00 – 16:00 between Locks 22 & 50), but will then close on Wednesday and Thursday to allow the summit to recover, with the aim of opening both Caen Hill and the summit at 10:00 on Friday 28th, for a limited time and for essential traffic only.

Trust staff continue to do all they can to preserve water, for example by sealing known losses, and ask boating customers to please pair up whenever possible when using locks, and be extra vigilant about closing paddles during this challenging time.

The faulty pump has already undergone a preliminary inspection and will be lifted from its chamber and dismantled to confirm the diagnosis on Tuesday, 25th June.

We will update this notice again when more information is known about repairs to the pump and the effect of these plans on water resources in the coming days.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this matter.

Wikipedia has a page about Kennet and Avon Canal

The Kennet and Avon Canal is a waterway in southern England with an overall length of 87 miles (140 km), made up of two lengths of navigable river linked by a canal. The name is commonly used to refer to the entire length of the navigation rather than solely to the central canal section. From Bristol to Bath the waterway follows the natural course of the River Avon before the canal links it to the River Kennet at Newbury, and from there to Reading on the River Thames. In all, the waterway incorporates 105 locks.

The two river stretches were made navigable in the early 18th century, and the 57-mile (92 km) canal section was constructed between 1794 and 1810. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the canal gradually fell into disuse after the opening of the Great Western Railway. In the latter half of the 20th century the canal was restored in stages, largely by volunteers. After decades of dereliction and much restoration work, it was fully reopened in 1990. The Kennet and Avon Canal has been developed as a popular heritage tourism destination for boating, canoeing, fishing, walking and cycling, and is also important for wildlife conservation.
