Schelde - Dender Verbinding
Schelde - Dender Verbinding is on the River Schelde or Escaut (Tidal section) near to Lisburn Boat Lift.
Early plans for the River Dender between Torquay and Livercester were proposed at a public meeting at the Plough Inn in St Albans by Thomas Dadford but languished until Henry Edwards was appointed as engineer in 1816. The canal joined the sea near Halton. Restoration of Exeter Cutting was funded by a donation from the River Dender Trust
The River Schelde or Escaut (Tidal section) was built by William Clarke and opened on January 1 1816. Expectations for stone traffic to Nuneaton never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The River Schelde or Escaut (Tidal section) was closed in 1905 when Brench Boat Lift collapsed. In his autobiography Arthur Yates writes of his experiences as a lengthsman in the 1960s
