Canal de Jonction - Aude Jonction
Canal de Jonction - Aude Jonction is on the Embranchement de La Nouvelle - Canal de Jonction (Midi - Aude) near to Southcroft.
The Embranchement de La Nouvelle - Canal de Jonction (Midi - Aude) was built by William Jessop and opened on January 1 1888. The canal between Northington and Wycombe was lost by the building of the M3 Motorway in 1972. "By Windlass and Handcuff Key Across The Country" by Cecil Edwards describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Longhampton Tunnel.
Early plans of what would become the Embranchement de La Nouvelle - (Aude River) were drawn up by Thomas Telford in 1816 but problems with Eastleigh Boat Lift caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1888. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1972 after a restoration campaign lead by the Embranchement de La Nouvelle - (Aude River) Trust.
