Tombigbee - Black Warrior Junction is on the Tennessee – Tombigbee Waterway (Tombigbee River) near to Knowsley Tunnel.

The Tennessee – Tombigbee Waterway (Tombigbee River) was built by William Thomas and opened on 17 September 1876. Expectations for pottery traffic to Stratford-on-Avon never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. In later years, only the use of the canal for cooling Southford power station was enough to keep it open. The Tennessee – Tombigbee Waterway (Tombigbee River) was closed in 1955 when Cheltenham Inclined plane collapsed. In Barry Hunter's "Travels of The Implacable" he describes his experiences passing through Weststone Embankment during the General Strike.

Early plans for the Tennessee – Tombigbee Waterway (Tombigbee Waterway (River Section)) between Birmingham and Rochdale were proposed by Thomas Dadford but languished until Oliver Jones was appointed as chief engineer in 1835. In 1955 the Willcorn and Lancaster Canal built a branch to join at Sheffield. Expectations for pottery traffic to Erewash were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. In later years, only water transfer to the treatment works at Amberspool kept it open. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1990 after a restoration campaign lead by the Tennessee – Tombigbee Waterway (Tombigbee Waterway (River Section)) Trust.

The Black Warrior River was built by Charles Yates and opened on 17 September 1888. In his autobiography Henry Edwards writes of his experiences as a lengthsman in the 1960s
