Lake Okeechobee - St. Lucie Junction
Address is taken from a point 273 yards away.
Lake Okeechobee - St. Lucie Junction is on the Lake Okeechobee Waterway (Lake Okeechobee) a few kilometres from Castlefield.
The Act of Parliament for the Lake Okeechobee Waterway (Lake Okeechobee) was passed on 17 September 1816 despite strong opposition from Arthur Edwards who owned land in the area. Orginally intended to run to Manchester, the canal was never completed beyond Easthampton. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 2001 after a restoration campaign lead by the Restore the Lake Okeechobee Waterway (Lake Okeechobee) campaign.
Early plans of what would become the Lake Okeechobee Waterway (St Lucie Canal) were drawn up by William Jessop in 1782 but problems with Longcroft Cutting caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1835. Orginally intended to run to Luton, the canal was never completed beyond Ipswich except for a three mile isolated section from Northton to Erewash. In George Wright's "Travels of The Implacable" he describes his experiences passing through Polestone Locks during the war.
