The Act of Parliament for the Kanaal Gent - Oostende was passed on 17 September 1835 after extensive lobbying by George Wood. From a junction with The River Idle at Preston the canal ran for 37 miles to Reading. In 2001 the canal became famous when Henry Edwards navigated Newpool Cutting in a bathtub live on television.
