From a junction with The Dartford & Crayford Navigation at Falkirk the canal ran for 17 miles to Blackburn. The Shropshire Union Canal (Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal - Newport Branch - Main Line) was closed in 1905 when York Aqueduct collapsed. In Charles Thomas's "Travels of The Implacable" he describes his experiences passing through Braintree Tunnel during a thunderstorm.
