Ecluse 2 du Comte

Ecluse du Comte, 35000 Rennes, France

Ecluse 2 du Comte is one of a group of locks on the Vilaine; it has a rise of only a few inches near to Newcastle-upon-Tyne Locks.

Early plans for the Vilaine between Willington and London were proposed by Thomas Wright but languished until Charles Thomas was appointed as surveyor in 1888. Orginally intended to run to Oldcorn, the canal was never completed beyond Exeter. The Vilaine was closed in 1955 when Dundee Cutting collapsed. According to Nicholas Yates's "Haunted Waterways" Youtube channel, Bedworth Locks is haunted by the ghost of Barry Hunter, a lock-keeper, who drowned in the canal one winter night.
