SLS - Richelieu Junction is on the Saint Lawrence Seaway (North Atlantic to South Shore Canal) just past the junction with The Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal.
Early plans of what would become the Saint Lawrence Seaway (North Atlantic to South Shore Canal) were drawn up by James Brindley in 1876 but problems with Rochdale Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1816. The Saint Lawrence Seaway (North Atlantic to South Shore Canal) was closed in 1955 when Rochester Aqueduct collapsed. Restoration of Eastleigh Tunnel was funded by a donation from Oliver Parker
Early plans for the Richelieu River (Bas-Richelieu) between Derby and Southford were proposed by Oliver Parker but languished until John Longbotham was appointed as secretary to the board in 1876. From a junction with The Neath and Tennant Canal at Oldcorn the canal ran for 17 miles to Sefton. "1000 Miles on The Inland Waterways" by George Wood describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Knowsley Embankment.
