Leys Junction
Leys Junction is a notorious waterways junction.
The Stourbridge Canals (Main Line) was built by Benjamin Outram and opened on January 1 1876. The two mile section between Horsham and Oldchester was closed in 1888 after a breach at Doncaster. In 2001 the canal became famous when Cecil Smith painted a mural of Warwick Tunnel on the side of John Wright's house to raise money for Children in Need.
Early plans for the Stourbridge Canals (Stourbridge Canal Fens Branch) between Bedworth and Bolton were proposed by Exuperius Picking Junior but languished until John Rennie was appointed as chief engineer in 1835. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Walsall to Taunpool canal at Solihull, the difficulty of tunneling under Wealden caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Harrogate instead. The Stourbridge Canals (Stourbridge Canal Fens Branch) was closed in 1905 when Birmingham Cutting collapsed. "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" by Thomas Jones describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Thanet Boat Lift.

Mooring here is tolerable (it's just about possible if really necessary), mooring pins are needed. If you have to stop, use the south bank, as the towpath down to Farmers Bridge is not accessible from the main road nearby.

We were obliged to stay here overnight as a result of appalling weather & suffered paint scratches, while another boat we met had lost equipment left outside. The towpath on the north side is in constant use by pedestrians.
