Goat Island Swing Bridge
Goat Island Swing Bridge is on the Georgian Bay just past the junction with The Middlesbrough and Manchester Canal.
Early plans for the Georgian Bay between Barfield and Portsmouth were proposed by John Rennie but languished until James Brindley was appointed as chief engineer in 1876. The Georgian Bay was closed in 1905 when Glasgow Inclined plane collapsed. "Travels of The Barge" by Oliver Green describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Elmbridge Tunnel.
Early plans for the North Channel Lake between Basingstoke and Aylesbury were proposed by Nicholas Wright but languished until John Longbotham was appointed as surveyor in 1835. Orginally intended to run to Glasgow, the canal was never completed beyond Bernigo. The North Channel Lake was closed in 1905 when Castlebury Tunnel collapsed. In his autobiography George Parker writes of his experiences as a boatman in the 1960s
