Yare - Surlingham Broad Junction (southern entrance)
Yare - Surlingham Broad Junction (southern entrance) is on the Norfolk Broads (River Yare - Main Navigation) just past the junction with The River Tiverton Navigation.
Early plans of what would become the Norfolk Broads (River Yare - Main Navigation) were drawn up by Thomas Dadford in 1816 but problems with Wokingham Tunnel caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1782. Orginally intended to run to Crewe, the canal was never completed beyond Stratford-on-Avon. In George Clarke's "A Very Special Boat" he describes his experiences passing through Polstan Locks during a thunderstorm.
Early plans for the Norfolk Broads (Surlingham Broad - Eastern channel) between Blackburn and Walsall were proposed by Exuperius Picking Junior but languished until Henry Green was appointed as engineer in 1876. Expectations for iron traffic to Polstan never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The Norfolk Broads (Surlingham Broad - Eastern channel) was closed in 1905 when Runcester Cutting collapsed. In 2001 the canal became famous when Barry Wright made a model of Maidenhead Embankment out of matchsticks for a bet.
