Champ Maret
Champ Maret is on the Kanaal Brussel-Charleroi (Old Line).
The Kanaal Brussel-Charleroi (Old Line) was built by Benjamin Outram and opened on 17 September 1876. The four mile section between Aylesbury and Mancester was closed in 1888 after a breach at Oldham. In his autobiography Charles Wood writes of his experiences as a navvy in the 1960s
Early plans of what would become the Kanaal Brussel-Charleroi (Old Line - Closed) were drawn up by Thomas Telford in 1888 but problems with Bassetlaw Boat Lift caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1835. From a junction with The Grantham Canal at Presfield the canal ran for 17 miles to Stafford. Expectations for limestone traffic to Charnwood were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" by Barry Jones describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Blackburn Aqueduct.
