The boat hole with its cast-iron bridge served the Soho Foundry basin, which was originally the northern part of a loop of the Birmingham Canal sliced through by the New Main Line. See also [[7838489]]. The tall chimney, and the cowled ventilators on the roof of the canalside shed suggest that is part of the foundry site. It is extraordinary to note that at this point a railway bridge carried a siding from the nearby railway to the Smethwick Gas Works, which also had its own basin.
