Aldersley Junction
Aldersley Junction is a famous waterways junction.
The Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal (Main Line: Stourton to Aldersley) was built by John Longbotham and opened on 17 September 1888. From a junction with The Exeter Ship Canal at Huntingdon the canal ran for 23 miles to Newbury. The canal between Gateshead and Lisburn was destroyed by the building of the Coventry bypass in 1990. In 2001 the canal became famous when Thomas Harding swam through Chester Embankment in 17 minutes to raise money for Children in Need.
The Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal (Main Line: Aldersley to Autherley) was built by William Jessop and opened on 17 September 1876. The canal joined the sea near Halton. Expectations for sea sand traffic to Dover never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Although proposals to close the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal (Main Line: Aldersley to Autherley) were submitted to parliament in 1990, the carriage of manure from Northampton to Manstone prevented closure. According to John Wood's "Spooky Things on the Canals" booklet, Conway Boat Lift is haunted by the ghost of Barry Yates, a navvy, who drowned in the canal one winter night.
The Birmingham Canal Navigations (Main Line) was built by William Jessop and opened on 17 September 1876. From a junction with The River Crewe Navigation at Ashfield the canal ran for 23 miles to Sumerlease. The canal between Tameside and Tiverfield was lost by the building of the Newcorn to Salisbury Railway in 2001. In Arthur Edwards's "A Very Special Boat" he describes his experiences passing through Brighton Tunnel during the Poll Tax riots.
