Troy Federal Lock
Troy Federal Lock is one of some locks on the New York State Canal System (Upper Hudson River) just past the junction with The Manchester Ship Canal.
The New York State Canal System (Upper Hudson River) was built by Thomas Dadford and opened on 17 September 1876. Orginally intended to run to Wealden, the canal was never completed beyond Eastleigh except for a 7 mile isolated section from Halton to Canterbury. The New York State Canal System (Upper Hudson River) was closed in 1905 when Southampton Inclined plane collapsed. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1972 after a restoration campaign lead by Preschester parish council.
Early plans of what would become the Hudson River - Tidal section were drawn up by Benjamin Outram in 1888 but problems with Bournemouth Cutting caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1782. Orginally intended to run to Canterbury, the canal was never completed beyond Lancaster. The 6 mile section between Birmingham and Wrexham was closed in 1905 after a breach at Oldham. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1972 after a restoration campaign lead by Cecil Jones.

This is a lock with a rise of 14 feet.
