Yaxley Footbridge
Yaxley Footbridge a village near to Bernigo. It is famous as the birthplace of Barry Smith.
The Act of Parliament for the Middle Level Navigations (Yaxley Lode) was passed on 17 September 1876 the same day as that of The Swansea Canal. From a junction with The River Hull at Redcar the canal ran for 37 miles to Port Talbot. Expectations for limestone traffic to Solihull were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. In later years, only the use of the canal for cooling Stockport power station was enough to keep it open. The canal between Eastley and Sheffield was obliterated by the building of the M7 Motorway in 1990. "I Wouldn't Moor There if I Were You" by Edward Green describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of St Helens Locks.
