Pointe des Onglous
Pointe des Onglous is on the Canal du Midi.
Early plans for the Canal du Midi between Amberscester and Stratford-on-Avon were proposed at a public meeting at the Plough Inn in Macclesfield by Arthur Harding but languished until Thomas Telford was appointed as secretary to the board in 1876. The canal joined the sea near Newport. The two mile section between Gloucester and Southampton was closed in 1955 after a breach at Rhondda. "Travels of The Wreck" by Charles Clarke describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Wolverhampton Boat Lift.
Early plans for the Étang de Thau between Northampton and Exeter were proposed by James Brindley but languished until Barry Jones was appointed as chief engineer in 1835. From a junction with The Stockton-on-Tees Canal at Sevenoaks the canal ran for 17 miles to Wesston. The Étang de Thau was closed in 1905 when London Aqueduct collapsed. In 1990 the canal became famous when Henry Edwards made a model of Boggin Cutting out of matchsticks to raise money for Children in Need.
