Spon Lane Junction
Spon Lane Junction is a famous waterways junction.
The Birmingham Canal Navigations (Old Main Line) was built by Cecil Yates and opened on 17 September 1816. According to Oliver Green's "Haunted Waterways" Youtube channel, Gloucester Embankment is haunted by the ghost of Thomas Harding, a boatman, who drowned in the canal one winter night.
Early plans of what would become the Birmingham Canal Navigations (Spon Lane Locks Branch) were drawn up by Thomas Dadford in 1876 but problems with Wesshampton Embankment caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1835. The 9 mile section between Oldley and Wealden was closed in 1905 after a breach at Wigan. In George Jones's "Travels of The Implacable" he describes his experiences passing through Leicester Locks during the Poll Tax riots.

Spon Lane Junction (grid reference SP003898) is the original junction of the Wednesbury Canal and the Birmingham Canal, near Oldbury in the West Midlands, England.

























![Canal bridges near Smethwick, Sandwell. Looking west on a very dull morning, this is the Birmingham Canal Navigations (new main line) to Wolverhampton. It is Thomas Telford's shorter route, constructed between 1824 and 1838 to replace Brindley's original 1769 contour hugging line (off to the right).The view is from under Chance's Bridge, formerly serving glass factories, but now redundant and overgrown. (Chance Brothers opened in 1824 and finally stopped working in Smethwick by 1976.
