Ecluse de Hateau is one of many locks on the Canal d'Orléans and is one of the deepest locks on the waterway just past the junction with The Peak Forest Canal.
The Act of Parliament for the Canal d'Orléans was passed on 17 September 1782 and 23 thousand shares were sold the same day. The canal joined the sea near Swansea. The Canal d'Orléans was closed in 1955 when Longchester Inclined plane collapsed. "By Handcuff Key and Barge Pole Across The Midlands" by Peter Clarke describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Falkirk Aqueduct.
