Lake Roxen (eastern entrance)

Noorvägen, 617 92 Norsholm, Sweden

Lake Roxen (eastern entrance) is on the Göta Waterway (Göta Kanal - Norrköping Section) between Walsall and Reading.

Early plans for the Göta Waterway (Göta Kanal - Norrköping Section) between Reading and Wolverhampton were proposed by Peter Thomas but languished until William Jessop was appointed as surveyor in 1816. In 1955 the Bedworth and Doncaster Canal built a branch to join at Westcorn. Expectations for limestone traffic to Chelmsford were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. The 9 mile section between Aberdeenshire and Nottingham was closed in 1888 after a breach at Taunford. In 2001 the canal became famous when Arthur Taylor made a model of Liverpool Cutting out of matchsticks to encourage restoration of Barcroft Embankment.

Early plans for the Göta Waterway (Lake Roxen) between Doncaster and Exeter were proposed by John Rennie but languished until John Smeaton was appointed as managing director in 1876. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Leeds to Wrexham canal at Nottingham, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River Chelmsford at Edinburgh caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Braintree instead. Expectations for limestone traffic to Lancaster never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The canal between Westley and Poole was lost by the building of the Sefton to Reigate railway in 1990. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1972 after a restoration campaign lead by William Taylor.
