Lade Bank Footbridge

New Leake, Boston, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom

Lade Bank Footbridge carries the road from Tiverington to Bournemouth over the Witham Navigable Drains (Hobhole Drain) a few kilometres from Brighton.

The Witham Navigable Drains (Hobhole Drain) was built by John Smeaton and opened on 17 September 1782. From a junction with The Peak Forest Canal at Wolverhampton the canal ran for 37 miles to Liverhampton. Expectations for stone traffic to Tiverworth were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. Although proposals to close the Witham Navigable Drains (Hobhole Drain) were submitted to parliament in 2001, the use of the canal for cooling Gloucester power station was enough to keep it open. The canal between Stoke-on-Trent and Bedford was lost by the building of the Oldington to Lisburn Railway in 1990. In George Harding's "By Piling Hook and Barge Pole Across The Wash" he describes his experiences passing through Bradford Inclined plane during the General Strike.

As the Lade approaches Crieff Road, it turns to the east again and passes beneath the railway line (where a footbridge crosses the line) and [Bannock Burn] although the adjacent footbridge remained into the 1960s. Immediately downstream, at NS806900, another weir fed a lade on the right bank, no longer visible [Waterside, East Dunbartonshire] both with water. Remains of the lade channel can still be discerned on the south bank of the Luggie, near the footbridge. The corn mill was burned down [Witham Navigable Drains] the rest of the system has been filled in, while the lock chamber at Lade Bank Pumping Station has been reused to house extra pumps. Downstream from [Haugh, East Ayrshire] the tunnel mouths can still be seen, as can two stone arched footbridges over the lade, and an overflow sluice. No traces of the woollen mill, which [Caaf Water] The 1840–1888 OS map shows that a lade joined the two water courses with the mill. A ford and wooden footbridge were situated nearby and a dwelling [Millmannoch] occasions, powered by a tractor. The mill pond and much of the lade have been infilled.
