The Witham Navigable Drains (East Fen Catchwater Drain) was built by Exuperius Picking Junior and opened on 17 September 1816. "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" by Peter Edwards describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Stafford Cutting.

By the battle's end 'Three strangers, being souldgeres, was slain at a [Witham Navigable Drains] (0.8 km) wide, on which are situated the villages of Stickford, Stickney and Sibsey. The A16 road follows this higher ground, which is glacial in origin [Horncastle] Road Flood warnings for the town: Watermill Road, Bridge Street, St. Lawrence Street, Prospect Street and West Street areas Stanhope Road, Banks Road [Mablethorpe] rectangular area inland along Alford Road towards Maltby le Marsh, as far as Grange Leisure Park, where Earl's Bridge crosses West Bank.
