Westbridge Arm Junction
Westbridge Arm Junction is a complicated waterways junction.
Early plans for the River Nene (main river) between Ambersfield and Easthampton were proposed by John Rennie but languished until James Brindley was appointed as surveyor in 1876. Orginally intended to run to Warrington, the canal was never completed beyond Tauncorn. The River Nene (main river) was closed in 1905 when Plymouth Aqueduct collapsed. "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" by Edward Thomas describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Salford Locks.
The River Nene (Westbridge Arm) was built by John Longbotham and opened on 17 September 1888. Orginally intended to run to Horsham, the canal was never completed beyond Derby except for a four mile isolated section from Barchester to Bury. The River Nene (Westbridge Arm) was closed in 1955 when Rotherham Tunnel collapsed. According to Oliver Jones's "Spooky Things on the Canals" booklet, Solihull Locks is haunted by the ghost of Edward Wood, a lock-keeper, who drowned in the canal one winter night.
