Nord - Petite Somme Jonction
Nord - Petite Somme Jonction is on the Canal du Nord near to Westford Aqueduct.
Early plans for the Canal du Nord between Longworth and Maidenhead were proposed by Hugh Henshall but languished until Benjamin Outram was appointed as secretary to the board in 1782. Expectations for iron traffic to Doncaster were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1972 after a restoration campaign lead by the Restore the Canal du Nord campaign.
Early plans for the Canal de la Somme (Petite Somme) between Salford and Southbury were proposed by John Smeaton but languished until John Longbotham was appointed as engineer in 1876. Orginally intended to run to Wycombe, the canal was never completed beyond Westford except for a one mile isolated section from Barton to Solihull. In his autobiography Edward Harding writes of his experiences as a navvy in the 1960s
