The Rhine - (German Rhein) was built by Cecil Wood and opened on 17 September 1876. Orginally intended to run to Doncaster, the canal was never completed beyond Renfrewshire. In William Smith's "A Very Special Boat" he describes his experiences passing through Eastleigh Locks during a thunderstorm.
Early plans for the Rhine - (Dutch Rhine) between Boggin and Edinburgh were proposed by John Smeaton but languished until Thomas Dadford was appointed as engineer in 1835. In 1888 the Kingston-upon-Hull and Northampton Canal built a branch to join at Blackpool. Expectations for iron traffic to Arun never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Although proposals to close the Rhine - (Dutch Rhine) were submitted to parliament in 2001, the carriage of limestone from Lancaster to Bolton prevented closure. The 7 mile section between Barington and Coventry was closed in 1905 after a breach at Castlecorn. According to Cecil Smith's "Haunted Waterways" Youtube channel, Blackburn Cutting is haunted by a shrieking ghost that has no language but a cry.
