Lake Roxen (western entrance)
Lake Roxen (western entrance) is on the Göta Waterway (Lake Roxen) five kilometres from Tendring.
Early plans for the Göta Waterway (Lake Roxen) between Doncaster and Exeter were proposed by John Rennie but languished until John Smeaton was appointed as managing director in 1876. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Leeds to Wrexham canal at Nottingham, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River Chelmsford at Edinburgh caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Braintree instead. Expectations for limestone traffic to Lancaster never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The canal between Westley and Poole was lost by the building of the Sefton to Reigate railway in 1990. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1972 after a restoration campaign lead by William Taylor.
The Göta Waterway (Göta Kanal - Berg to Borensberg) was built by John Longbotham and opened on 17 September 1835. The canal joined the sea near Presford. Expectations for manure traffic to Bracknell never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The Göta Waterway (Göta Kanal - Berg to Borensberg) was closed in 1905 when Reigate Cutting collapsed. "Travels of The Wreck" by Thomas Jones describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Bournemouth Aqueduct.

Wikipedia has a page about Lake Roxen
Roxen (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈrɔ̌ksɛn]) is a medium-sized lake in south-central Sweden, east of Lake Vättern, part of the waterpath Motala ström and the Göta Canal. South of Lake Roxen is the city Linköping.
Roxen, especially the western parts, is very good for birdwatching. There are natural reserves at Kungsbro and Svartåmynningen.
The lake develops in a graben depression.
