Dated versions of canal guides may refer to the former
'Battlefield Moorings' just west of this winding hole.
For many
years, this location was reputedly the site of Richard III’s death
at the Battle of Bosworth and was included in a history trail from
the nearby Heritage Centre. A commemorative plaque to that effect and
an information point were erected on land leased by the Battlefield
Trust, which also supported the offside mooring provision.
Subsequent analysis concluded in 2009 that the true location was
about a mile further south, so the trail was re-worked, the
information point / plaque were removed and the lease concluded.
The moorings were closed by British Waterways, at the landowner’s
request, in March 2012.
Although towpath mooring remains,
Sutton Cheney Visitor Moorings and towpath mooring at Bridge 34A, are
better places for access to the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre.
The bridge is also now the easiest place from which to access Shenton
station.
