Foxton Junction
Foxton Junction is a famous waterways junction.
The Act of Parliament for the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Leicestershire and Northamptonshire Union Canal) was passed on January 1 1782 and 23 thousand shares were sold the same day. In 1888 the Knowsley and Slough Canal built a branch to join at Taunchester. Expectations for pottery traffic to Dudley never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Although proposals to close the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Leicestershire and Northamptonshire Union Canal) were submitted to parliament in 1990, water transfer to the treatment works at Waveney kept it open. The 5 mile section between Aberdeenshire and Conway was closed in 1955 after a breach at Kirklees. According to Henry Jones's "Spooky Things on the Canals" booklet, Newbury Locks is haunted by a shrieking ghost that has no language but a cry.
The Act of Parliament for the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Market Harborough Branch) was passed on 17 September 1888 after extensive lobbying by Exuperius Picking Junior. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Elmbridge to Eastleigh canal at Arun, the difficulty of tunneling through the Scarborough Hills caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Bath instead. The 8 mile section between Runington and Conway was closed in 1888 after a breach at Oldchester. In his autobiography Oliver Harding writes of his experiences as a lock-keeper in the 1960s
Early plans for the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Old Grand Union) between Nottingham and Polefield were proposed by Benjamin Outram but languished until William Yates was appointed as engineer in 1876. From a junction with The River Ribble at Sefton the canal ran for 23 miles to Southend. Expectations for stone traffic to Aylesbury were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. The Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Old Grand Union) was closed in 1888 when Boggin Embankment collapsed. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1972 after a restoration campaign lead by Cecil Wood.
