![Canalside at Ryeford - Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. Looking north across the Stroudwater Canal to the buildings which face out onto the B4008 Cainscross - Quedgeley road. This used to be here part of the A419 Cirencester - Fromebridge road but the A419 has been diverted to run from Cainscross to the Horsetrough Roundabout to the south of its previous route, which was relatively narrow and winding in parts. I had personal experience of the rushing traffic there - one of my Stroud addresses being in Westward Road, Ebley. On the back wall of the house, under the eaves, can be seen a greyish-brown band. On this the letters 'W H SMITH CABINET MAKER' can still just be made out. Pleasing to see a still intact ghost sign - some meet their doom at the hands of an owner. In recent years there has been much renovation work done on this waterway by the Cotswold Canals Trust in conjunction with other bodies but what the future might hold is unclear in this present environment of allegedly necessary financial stringency.
