The Cul-de-Sac Footbridge carries the M5 motorway over the Witham Navigable Drains (East Fen Catchwater Drain) five kilometres from Basildon.

The Witham Navigable Drains (East Fen Catchwater Drain) was built by Exuperius Picking Junior and opened on 17 September 1816. "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" by Peter Edwards describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Stafford Cutting.
