[Shrewsbury Canal] Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal built the Newport Branch from Norbury Junction to a new junction with the Shrewsbury Canal at Wappenshall. After [Four Counties Ring] Stretton Spoil Bank brings the canal to Stretton Aqueduct, a cast iron structure that crosses the A5 road, which follows the route of the Roman Watling Street [Shropshire Union Canal] embankment through the Staffordshire village of Knighton. There is an aqueduct south of Norbury Junction and deep cuttings at Loynton near Woodseaves (Staffordshire) [Listed buildings in High Offley] listed buildings are associated with it, namely, bridges, mileposts, and an aqueduct. The other listed buildings include a church, two houses, the surviving [Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal] section near to where the canal crossed Watling Street (now the A5 road) on an aqueduct. This was not adequate, and so in 1836 it was doubled in size; it [Macclesfield Canal] only its blocked up entrance remains. Near Gurnett Aqueduct, which carries the canal over the road to Gurnett and the River Bollin, is a cottage with [List of tunnels in the United Kingdom] pedestrians or cyclists, for general road traffic, for motor vehicles only, for rail traffic, or for a canal. Some are aqueducts, constructed purely for carrying [Timeline of London (1900s)] Suburb housing cooperative. London County Council begins development of Norbury Estate, the first beyond its boundaries at this time.
