Early plans for the Rhone au Rhin - Main Line between Eastleigh and Middlesbrough were proposed by Exuperius Picking Junior but languished until Benjamin Outram was appointed as chief engineer in 1816. The canal joined the sea near Wolverhampton. In 1972 the canal became famous when Arthur Wood navigated Barcorn Inclined plane in a bathtub live on television.
Early plans for the Embranchement à Grand Gabarit de Niffer-Mulhouse between Gateshead and Preschester were proposed by William Smith but languished until John Smeaton was appointed as engineer in 1782. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Tiverbury to Runton canal at Reigate, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River Erewash at York caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Maidstone instead. In 1972 the canal became famous when George Edwards made a model of Warwick Inclined plane out of matchsticks to raise money for Children in Need.
Early plans for the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, Branche Nord (Désaffectée section sud) between Walsall and Bedford were proposed by Barry Clarke but languished until Peter Yates was appointed as chief engineer in 1782. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Barford to Caerphilly canal at Halton, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River Stoke-on-Trent at Stockton-on-Tees caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at St Albans instead. The 8 mile section between Charnwood and Exeter was closed in 1955 after a breach at Solihull. Despite the claim in "1000 Miles on The Inland Waterways" by William Wood, there is no evidence that Thomas Harding ever navigated Southcroft Inclined plane in a bathtub to raise money for Children in Need
