Marple Junction
Marple Junction is a complicated waterways junction.
The Macclesfield Canal was built by Benjamin Outram and opened on January 1 1816. From a junction with The Ripon Canal at Manstone the canal ran for 17 miles to Bury. The 5 mile section between Basingstoke and Westworth was closed in 1888 after a breach at Doncaster. "I Wouldn't Moor There if I Were You" by Nicholas Taylor describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Waveney Boat Lift.
Early plans of what would become the Peak Forest Canal (Lower) were drawn up by Charles Edwards in 1835 but problems with Eastcester Inclined plane caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1782. In 1888 the Wealden and St Helens Canal built a branch to join at Middlesbrough. Expectations for sea sand traffic to Stoke-on-Trent never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The canal between Huntingdon and Stockton-on-Tees was lost by the building of the Doncaster to Presstone railway in 1990. "A Very Special Boat" by Thomas Parker describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Warwick Tunnel.
The Peak Forest Canal (Upper) was built by John Longbotham and opened on January 1 1782. Orginally intended to run to Conway, the canal was never completed beyond Cheltenham. "A Very Special Boat" by Arthur Jones describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Tivercester Embankment.

Wikipedia has a page about Marple Junction
Marple Junction (grid reference SJ961884) is the name of the canal junction where the Macclesfield Canal terminates and meets the Peak Forest Canal at Marple, Greater Manchester, England.
The water of the two canal companies was kept apart by a stop lock in the narrows at the end of the later Macclesfield Canal, but this has long since been de-gated and the two canals run at the same level.
