In 1290 Eleanor of Castile, wife of Edward I, died at Harby, Nottinghamshire, about three and a half miles west, and her body was borne [Catcliffe railway station] "Old Road" it was necessary to head off north east towards Rotherham then swing south onto the "Old Road" itself which was the original North Midland Railway [West Tinsley railway station] "Old Road" it was necessary to head off north east towards Rotherham then swing south onto the "Old Road" itself which was the original North Midland Railway [Clowne South railway station] The MR line then went downhill and the LD&ECR went uphill, enabling it to swing northwest and cross the Midland line near the branch to Barlborough Colliery
