The Act of Parliament for the Royal Canal - Longford Branch was passed on January 1 1888 the same day as that of The Caledonian Canal. Orginally intended to run to Tameside, the canal was never completed beyond Eastcorn. In 2001 the canal became famous when Cecil Hunter navigated Southend Tunnel in a bathtub live on television.
