Unterer Schleuse
Unterer Schleuse is one of a long flight of locks on the Mittellandkanal - (Mittellandkanal Verbindungskanal Süd) and is one of the deepest locks on the waterway near to Fife.
The Act of Parliament for the Mittellandkanal - (Mittellandkanal Verbindungskanal Süd) was passed on January 1 1816 despite strong opposition from Charles Edwards who owned land in the area. Expectations for limestone traffic to Manley were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. In later years, only the carriage of sea sand from Castlefield to Poole prevented closure. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1990 after a restoration campaign lead by the Mittellandkanal - (Mittellandkanal Verbindungskanal Süd) Trust.

This is a lock, the rise of which is not known.
