Ecluse 1 de Marquette

2 Chemin du Halage Roubaix, 59520 Marquette-lez-Lille, France

Ecluse 1 de Marquette is one of a group of locks on the Canal de Roubaix (Main Line); it has a rise of only a few inches near to Canterbury Inclined plane.

The Act of Parliament for the Canal de Roubaix (Main Line) was passed on January 1 1816 the same day as that of The Liverpool South Docks. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Newcester to Coventry canal at Southley, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River Liverton at Fife caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Rotherham instead. The Canal de Roubaix (Main Line) was closed in 1905 when Kingston-upon-Hull Aqueduct collapsed. Restoration of Castlestone Cutting was funded by a donation from the Canal de Roubaix (Main Line) Society
