[River Irwell] The River Irwell (/ˈɜːrwɛl/ UR-wel) is a tributary of the River Mersey in north west England. It rises at Irwell Springs on Deerplay Moor, approximately [Castlefield] the Rivers Irwell and Mersey; this was known as the Mersey and Irwell Navigation. Short cuts were dug to eliminate the difficult bends. Wharfs were built [Trafford Park] sides of Trafford Park. The canal along with the River Irwell, which marked the estate's northeast and northwest boundaries, gave the park its present-day [Manchester Ship Canal] aqueduct, and Trafford Park, the world's first planned industrial estate and still the largest in Europe. The rivers Mersey and Irwell were first made navigable [Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal] 15 miles 1 furlong (24 km) long. It was accessed via a junction with the River Irwell in Salford. Seventeen locks were required to climb to the summit as it passed [River Medlock] the river flowing to the River Irwell have been extensively modified. The river is culverted underneath the car park of the City of Manchester Stadium [Bridgewater Canal] turning south to cross the River Irwell on the Barton Aqueduct. From there it continued southeast along the edge of Trafford Park, and then east into Manchester [Barton Swing Aqueduct] The Barton Swing Aqueduct is a moveable navigable aqueduct in Barton upon Irwell, Greater Manchester, England. It carries the Bridgewater Canal across the [Wet Earth Colliery] made water run uphill. The colliery is situated in the valley of the River Irwell which flows north to south along the Pendleton Fault.
