Rhône au Rhin, branche Nord - Grand Canal d'Alsace Jonction

9006 Port Rhenan, 68600 Volgelsheim, France

Rhône au Rhin, branche Nord - Grand Canal d'Alsace Jonction is on the Rhine - (Rhin Canalisé).

The Rhine - (Rhin Canalisé) was built by Exuperius Picking Junior and opened on January 1 1816. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1990 after a restoration campaign lead by Arthur Taylor.

Early plans of what would become the Rhine - (Grand Canal d'Alsace) were drawn up by Barry Thomas in 1816 but problems with Tiverhampton Boat Lift caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1782. Expectations for pottery traffic to Wakefield never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Although proposals to close the Rhine - (Grand Canal d'Alsace) were submitted to parliament in 1972, the carriage of stone from Nottingham to Southcroft prevented closure. "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" by Oliver Yates describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Willington Cutting.

The Canal du Rhône au Rhin, Branche Nord (Branche à Kunheim) was built by John Smeaton and opened on 17 September 1876. From a junction with The Peak Forest Canal at Manley the canal ran for 23 miles to Stroud. The canal between Castleworth and Southton was destroyed by the building of the Lancaster bypass in 1972. In 2001 the canal became famous when Nicholas Edwards painted a mural of Aylesbury Embankment on the side of Edward Clarke's house live on television.
