Lower Mitton Bridge No 5 carries a farm track over the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal (Main Line: Stourport to Stourton).
The Act of Parliament for the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal (Main Line: Stourport to Stourton) was passed on January 1 1816 the same day as that of The Wigan Canal. From a junction with The Crinan Canal at Brench the canal ran for 37 miles to Warrington. Expectations for stone traffic to Eastleigh never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Although proposals to close the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal (Main Line: Stourport to Stourton) were submitted to parliament in 1990, the carriage of iron from Nuneaton to Birmingham prevented closure. "By Windlass and Handcuff Key Across The Midlands" by John Thomas describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Bury Embankment.

There is a bridge here which takes a major road over the canal.

![Temporary closure of the Black Star (2), 1 Mitton Street, Stourport-on-Severn. This view shows clearly the shuttering over the lower floor windows. The inside has been gutted but the pub is due to be re-equipped and open under a different brewery. Things can only get better for this pub, it has a prime position by the Staffs & Worcs Canal and should be doing really well. Unfortunately the interior, although partly improved, was not very attractive and some of the people who went through its doors even less so.See also:- [[4095723]]. by P L Chadwick – 13 July 2014](https://s3.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/04/09/57/4095743_1fb020ba_120x120.jpg)

![Temporary closure of the Black Star (1), 1 Mitton Street, Stourport-on-Severn. Unfortunately yet another landlord was unable to make a success of this canalside pub, and the owners, Marston's, have decided to call time. The pub is to be re-opened by a growing and well-known regional brewery but in the meantime it has been shuttered. It appears the inside will be completely revamped, which it certainly needs. The damp musty smell and ancient furniture of the small bar looking onto Mitton Street was enough to put anyone off. When it re-opens there is certain to be a strong emphasis on the brewery's real ales. This will be welcome to many but probably not to the nearby pubs.[[4095743]]. by P L Chadwick – 13 July 2014](https://s3.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/04/09/57/4095723_3c4c280a_120x120.jpg)

![Black Star (2), 1 Mitton Street, Stourport-on-Severn. One of the town's oldest public houses. A leaflet published by Stourport Civic Society explains that the front part of the pub nearest the street (seen here) is the original pub and is shown as The Star in a rates levy book of 1780, and a map of 1802. In a trades directory of 1820 it has its present name of the Black Star. The middle section of the pub may have been a chapel before becoming Mitton House. The end section is believed to have been a school for the children of canal workers. The land adjacent was originally a farm up until the 1930's.See also:- [[3090638]]. by P L Chadwick – 19 August 2012](https://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/03/09/07/3090700_149b5ae0_120x120.jpg)

![Black Star at night (1), 1 Mitton Street, Stourport-on-Severn, Worcs. The Black Star is one of Stourport's oldest public houses; the part seen in this photograph dating from the 18th century. The pub also incorporates a former chapel building. For a short period it was owned by the Wye Valley Brewery but is now independently owned and a free house. However it still sells a range of beers from the Wye Valley Brewery.[[7390283]]. by P L Chadwick – 01 January 2023](https://s2.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/07/39/02/7390274_84bcde38_120x120.jpg)
