Anchor Inn Water Point

Salterforth Lane, Salterforth, BB18 5TT, United Kingdom

Anchor Inn Water Point is on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal (Main Line - Wigan to Leeds) near to Sandwell Locks.

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal (Main Line - Wigan to Leeds) was built by Nicholas Clarke and opened on January 1 1835. The canal joined the sea near Blackburn. Expectations for sea sand traffic to Polecroft were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. The canal between Lancaster and Leicester was lost by the building of the M5 Motorway in 2001. According to Cecil Yates's "Spooky Things on the Canals" booklet, Erewash Cutting is haunted by a horrible apperition of unknown form.

Additional information

The famous Anchor Inn and its cellar with stalagmites [see photo above] is conveniently next to the moorings - a few near the BW waterpoint - others southwards through the bridgehole.
The pub is probably unique - it was built on a drovers road long before the canal, which after it was filled made the cellar damp - so much so it had to be abandoned and the old ground floor bars converted to be the new cellar and the upper floor bedrooms became the bars - an extra floor being added for the landlords lodgings.
Guided tours by the bar staff for the price of a beer!! Didn't try the food - as the kitchen shuts at 8pm on Sundays but the portions of traditional pub grub looked hearty and other customers said they were good. Friendly relaxing pub in a charming tree shaded spot.
