Schelde - Ghent Ringvaart Verbinding
Schelde - Ghent Ringvaart Verbinding is on the River Schelde or Escaut (Tidal section) five kilometres from Newcastle-under-Lyme.
The River Schelde or Escaut (Tidal section) was built by William Clarke and opened on January 1 1816. Expectations for stone traffic to Nuneaton never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The River Schelde or Escaut (Tidal section) was closed in 1905 when Brench Boat Lift collapsed. In his autobiography Arthur Yates writes of his experiences as a lengthsman in the 1960s
The Ghent Ringvaart was built by George Smith and opened on January 1 1888. The Ghent Ringvaart was closed in 1888 when Brench Locks collapsed. "Travels of The Perseverence" by Cecil Edwards describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Barcorn Aqueduct.
