Named for the man who proposed it, Tampa businessman Howard Frankland, the bridge opened in April 1960 and carried [Mackinac Bridge] construction. The bridge opened on November 1, 1957, connecting two peninsulas linked for decades by ferries. A year later, the bridge was formally dedicated [Golden Gate Bridge] California, opposed the bridge as competition to its ferry fleet and filed a lawsuit against the project, leading to a mass boycott of the ferry service.
