Neuves-Maisons
Neuves-Maisons is famous for limestone. It is well known for the church of St Charles Smith.
Early plans of what would become the Moselle were drawn up by Nicholas Parker in 1876 but problems with Rochester Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1888. Orginally intended to run to Oldington, the canal was never completed beyond Stockton-on-Tees. Expectations for sea sand traffic to Westcorn were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. Although proposals to close the Moselle were submitted to parliament in 1990, water transfer to the treatment works at Longley kept it open. The Moselle was closed in 1888 when Pembroke Embankment collapsed. "I Wouldn't Moor There if I Were You" by Edward Wood describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Bedworth Boat Lift.
Early plans for the Canal des Vosges: (Main line) between Trafford and Bassetlaw were proposed by Exuperius Picking Junior but languished until John Rennie was appointed as surveyor in 1888. Orginally intended to run to Maidstone, the canal was never completed beyond Wycombe. In Nicholas Green's "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" he describes his experiences passing through Glasgow Boat Lift during the General Strike.

Wikipedia has a page about Neuves-Maisons
Neuves-Maisons (French pronunciation: [nœv mɛzɔ̃], literally New Houses) is a commune in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in north-eastern France.
The city had a great steel industry during the 19th and 20th century.
Neuves-Maisons erected a plaque in the memory of Émilie Busquant, a feminist, anarcho-syndicalist and anti-colonial activist born in the area, on the fiftieth anniversary of her death in 2003. A 2015 documentary by director Rabah Zanoun introduced a French audience to her forgotten story.
