[Mersey and Irwell Navigation] The Mersey and Irwell Navigation was a river navigation in North West England, which provided a navigable route from the Mersey estuary to Salford and [River Irwell] 17th and 18th centuries, the Irwell's lower reaches were a trading route that became part of the Mersey and Irwell Navigation. In the 19th century, the river's [Manchester and Salford Junction Canal] Junction Canal was a canal in the city of Manchester. It was originally built to provide a direct waterway between the Mersey and Irwell Navigation and [Manchester Ship Canal] Railway (from 1830), but by the late 19th century the Mersey and Irwell Navigation had fallen into disrepair and was often unusable. In addition, Manchester's [Castlefield] linked with the Mersey and Irwell Navigation by two short cuts. In 1848 the two viaducts of the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway crossed [Runcorn to Latchford Canal] historic county of Lancashire, England. It connected the Mersey and Irwell Navigation to the River Mersey at Runcorn. The canal was built to bypass the [Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal] was 15 miles 1 furlong (24 km) long. It was accessed via a junction with the River Irwell in Salford. Seventeen locks were required to climb to the summit [River Irwell Railway Bridge] The River Irwell Railway Bridge was built for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway (L&MR), the world's first passenger railway which used only steam locomotives [Hulme Locks Branch Canal] and was built to provide a direct waterway between the Mersey and Irwell Navigation and the Bridgewater Canal. The canal opened in 1838 and was superseded [Bridgewater Canal] Despite objections from the Mersey and Irwell Navigation Company, Royal assent was given on 24 March 1762.
