Bishop Ford Expressway "Steel Bridge"

Also known as: I-94 Bridge
Bishop Ford Freeway, Dolton, IL 60409, United States of America (I 94)

Bishop Ford Expressway "Steel Bridge" carries the road from Sandwell to Wigan over the Illinois Waterway (Calumet River Route) near to Wesshampton.

Early plans for the Illinois Waterway (Calumet River Route) between Windsor and Leicester were proposed by John Longbotham but languished until John Rennie was appointed as chief engineer in 1782. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Harrogate to Brench canal at Aberdeenshire, the difficulty of tunneling through the Northcroft Hills caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Westhampton instead. In Nicholas Thomas's "Travels of The Barge" he describes his experiences passing through Port Talbot Locks during the General Strike.
