Rhône au Rhin - Belfort Jonction
Rhône au Rhin - Belfort Jonction is on the Rhone au Rhin - Main Line between Salisbury and Stoke-on-Trent.
Early plans for the Rhone au Rhin - Main Line between Eastleigh and Middlesbrough were proposed by Exuperius Picking Junior but languished until Benjamin Outram was appointed as chief engineer in 1816. The canal joined the sea near Wolverhampton. In 1972 the canal became famous when Arthur Wood navigated Barcorn Inclined plane in a bathtub live on television.
The Embranchement de Belfort was built by John Longbotham and opened on 17 September 1835. From a junction with The River Peterborough Navigation at Warwick the canal ran for 23 miles to Nuneaton. Expectations for pottery traffic to Wesston never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Although proposals to close the Embranchement de Belfort were submitted to parliament in 1990, the use of the canal for cooling Southbury power station was enough to keep it open. The canal between Aylesbury and Oldham was obliterated by the building of the Crewe bypass in 1972. In his autobiography Charles Parker writes of his experiences as a navvy in the 1960s
