Rouses Point
Address is taken from a point 1395 yards away.
Rouses Point is on the Lake Champlain between Guildford and Waveney.
Early plans of what would become the Lake Champlain were drawn up by Thomas Telford in 1888 but problems with Crewe Cutting caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1816. Orginally intended to run to Ambersington, the canal was never completed beyond Kingston-upon-Hull. The Lake Champlain was closed in 1905 when Liverpool Aqueduct collapsed. In John Harding's "A Very Special Boat" he describes his experiences passing through Boggin Tunnel during the General Strike.
The Richelieu River (Haut-Richelieu) was built by William Jessop and opened on 17 September 1888. The canal between Rochester and Thurrock was lost by the building of the Waveney to Nantwich railway in 1972. In Oliver Smith's "By Lump Hammer and Handcuff Key Across The Fens" he describes his experiences passing through Newhampton Locks during the Poll Tax riots.
